Today was pretty huge for me. My favorite website for the past year or more has been Jason Kottke's kottke.org. It's just his personal blog, but it's very popular, and along with his near-daily posts, he also puts up about 5 or 10 fun and interesting links every day. Well today, he linked to a picture I made for my flickr account. The Picture The Picture has to do with Apple's new iPod Shuffle, a flash-based mp3 player from Apple that lacks a screen. This means you don't know what song is playing next, let alone what song is currently playing. Worst of all, iTunes loads the songs on to it in random order, so if you wanted to play your friend a specific song, you'd have to shuffle through 1 gig of music just to find it (you couldn't go to it directly). The worst part is that Apple is promoting the "never know whats playing next" idea of the player as an advantage. So I made a funny picture about how to "Turn any iPod into an iPod Shuffle in 3 easy steps" and posted it to my flickr account. The Response Well, The Ploy I should also mention this. I kind of set kottke up to link to my picture. I got the idea right before I left work yesterday, so I snapped the pictures, put them together and posted it. I knew if kottke saw them, he might think it was funny and in turn, might link to it. First thing was to tag it with "ipodshuffle", a tag that was sure to be popular the day after the iPod shuffle came out. Then, Sara suggested that I comment on one of kottke's photos so he would see my little icon and possibly click on it. Then, I made sure that it was the first picture to come up when you clicked my name. With all of those conditions, I knew there would be a pretty good chance kottke would see it, and, well... he did. Update: Just found this other link on engadget. The comments on that site are much better than the comments on my flickr page. Go check it out. Here is a list of many sites who linkled to it: Kottke Gizmodo The Cult of Mac Engadget Hot Links Additive Rich fscklog and some others from google searches. -=MovieQuoteoftheDay=- "A good plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow"
