September 30, 2004

My friend Nick came over last Saturday so we could hang out and party it up, like two twenty-somethings should. The night went pretty good until Nick started throwing up in the wee hours of the morning at my house. The only problem was that he wasn't expunging the toxins he had consumed earlier that evening, but rather, it was his body's way of protecting itself from salmonella poisoning.

Yes, earlier in the day Nick walked (like 10 miles) to get some Chinese food. Apparently, one of the cooks accidentally touched some uncooked dog and accidentally contaminated Nick's food, in turn "salmonelling" Nick. Nick is still sick and has been throwing up for 5 days. He says it should be gone pretty soon, so that is good, but seriously, I only thought salmonella poisoning only existed in news reports and on Lysol commercials. Wish Nick well everyone. I think he reads this site.

I noticed something quite profound the other day when thinking about the original Star Wars Trilogy. Now, even though Lucas' writing of dialog is the equivalent of Helen Keller's penmanship, He sure can write a hell of a story. Heres my thinking. In writing, you lean there are really only 3 kinds of stories.

Man vs Machine - Star Wars: A New Hope - Obviously this is Luke vs the Death Star. As Kevin Smith pointed out, It's kinda funny that there's this massive Space Station that has this vulnerability that if you shoot down this little whole than the whole thing blows up.
Man vs Man - Empire Strikes back - Luke fights Darth Vader at the end. Very nice. Classic. Hand gets cut off (or did his sleeve just get longer?). Regardless, awesome ending.
Man vs Self - Return of the Jedi - Luke fights himself, does not fall to the dark side in the end. Then Luke takes off Darth's helmet and it looks like Anakin's skin is all soggy and water saturated. At least thats what it looked like to me.

Good work George. Finish Revenge of the Sith and then retire. Stop modifying your old movies. Speaking of, does anyone know when American Graffiti Special Edition comes out on DVD?

So far I have made it through A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back (although I don't remember part of Empire...), but so far I can say I am quite impressed. The picture is better than ever and the sound is phenomenal as expected. As far as the new enhancements, I've noticed one or two little added segways and as for the re-done Jabba the hut scene, he seems a little too detailed, and until I can do a 'side by side' comparison to the old one, I don't see any great improvements.

One thing that I found really interesting was Luke's haircut. When I saw Luke, I said "holy crap, he looks pretty hip," but then I remembered how uncool I used to think he looked. Then I realized its because that hair style is back. A few years, when I saw special edition that hair was long out of style, but now with shows like The OC and The WB's Everwood, I know that this hair style is in fact back, and back to stay.

mark: Hey, you gonna buy the Star Wars DVDs today?
matt: no
mark: whys that?
matt: I'm purging myself of Lucas. I'm teaching him a lesson.
mark: you have to admit, it is reasonably priced
matt: he'll come out with another version in two months for Xmas.
matt: where the jawas are digitally remastered or some nonsense.

Unlike matt, I an pretty excited for the DVDs. I have been waiting for them for quite some time. I will watch as much as I can tonight, and then let all my /mark readers know how it went.

Side Note: Nick said that there were Storm Troopers at the Best Buy he went to. I had no such luck.

If they ever make the Kobe thing into a movie, this will be the best line in the movie (this is transcribed from audio when Kobe was first questioned about the incident):

Detective Winters: "[...] I agree with you, I agree that you got caught up in the moment. Okay. No doubt about it, you know, no doubt about it whatsoever. What I think you got caught up in also Mr. Bryant, is that, and I agree, I, I completely agree you, it was consensual up to the point of the hugging and kissing issue I agree, completely consensual. I have no issues with that whatsoever. What I, what Im being, what Im skeptical on is that I dont know how consensual the sexual intercourse was. Okay. I dont, I dont, I guess to be honest with you Im not sure, Im not sure, if were getting all the facts presented to us as far as exactly what happened. See this is the way I look at it, I you know, I look at it this way, shes an attractive young lady okay."

Bryant: "She wasnt that attractive."

Hey everybody, the Starz International Film Festival is coming and you can volunteer to work it! Why volunteer? Because you get a complimentary tee-shirt, sure to impress! Not enough incentive you say? How about free vouchers to see the films featured at the event?! The more you work, the more vouchers you get.

If the sound of all this wets your whistle, the last Starz International Film Festival Volunteer Meeting is this Saturday at 11am at the Starz Film Center in the Tivoli on Auraria Campus, so be there! They still need a bunch of people!

You can apply to volunteer at:

For all interested, the Slashing Hyenas are starting up again. We will be playing Sunday nights starting in two weeks at Xpress Sports on 84th and Huron. All of the info (which right now, isn't very much) is on the Slashing Hyenas website.

Last night I got to babysit my Niece for the first time, and we had a great time. We ate some beef stroganauf, she gave most of hers to the dog, she tried on my shoes, we read some books. It was awesome. Sara even came over to help out (some much needed help I might add, them babies get the place messy). Anyhow, her parents are in Spain and Germany until next Thursday, but Sarah's 'vacation' is being documented at her web site. Mike and Kat: have fun while your there and eat some sausage for your brother for god sakes!

September 13, 2004

Hello everyone. I am back from my 2 week vacation to French-Guiana. It was amazing. The people there were so nice, and surprisingly good-smelling. The food, however was awful. Next time someone offers you a Crawdad and Bree burrito, politely decline.

None of that was true, I apologize. Actually, I have just been hanging out with my girlfriend Sara for the past two weeks and haven't had very much to post about, but hopefully I will be able to whip up some sauce more often, or at least I'll try.

Last night we watched Clerks X (10th anniversary edition). It was just as good as always, but it got me thinking about two things. The first was that they posed the question about killing innocent civilian contractors when they destroyed the 2nd Deathstar. I was wondering if George Lucas actually took this into consideration when writing the sequels, solving the moral dilemma by writing in these clones that no one would care about if they died or not. However, then you gotta think that these clones that they make still aren't contractors. They are made to be super commandos, and trained specifically for that purpose, so I don't think the question has really been solved by "oh, they made clones, it doesn't matter if you kill them because they are already dead inside."

The second thought I had, was why was there so much tie-in in the new animated "Lost Scene" to the other movies (Alissa, Brody, etc.") I think we all got the idea that these characters live in the same world, and didn't have to be reminded just how interlaced the movies are. I just am not sure why presumably, Kevin Smith would add so much of this and not just shoot the scene he wrote a long time ago (which I assume didn't have as many tie-ins). Really pulling quite the "hallucination of Hayden Christiansen" there, Kevin.
