January 31, 2005

Over the weekend, Nick and I were busy moving into my new house in Denver. And this time, it's not dirty suburb Denver like when we lived on 52nd ave., or La Ciudad de Denver, like when we lived at 38th and Federal, no sir. Now we are living actually in the city. We are in North West Cherry Creek, so it's not stick-up-your-ass Cherry Creek either. 5th and Josephine. It a very nice duplex. I predict that it will cut my drive in half if not more, and also be a lot more accommodating to my life living with Nick, since he has a "9 to five" job too, although, his job is more of an 8 to 5 with a worthless boss kind of deal.

Anyhow, I'll take some pictures and put them up tomorrow or the next day on my flickr. What the hell, I may even put up a video here. Now I'm one of those cool city kids, right? Am I right folks?

Update: Funny thing on my iPod Shuffle picture, someone just commented on it and wrote:

stupididiots says:

are you guys really this stupid? obviously the ipod shuffle is not meant as an improvement... in fact its supposed to be the opposite....thats the whole point. you guys might as well start putting down couches because instead of getting a couch for a few bills you could buy a porshe for a few hundred Gs, take off the wheels, and sit in it in your living room.

I hate going to lunch alone. I realized today, that I really do hate it. I used to go to lunch with co-workers every day, but every one of the co-workers who used to go to lunch with me has either quit, or now packs a lunch. I end up sitting here until 1am, subconsciously hoping that I will get an IM from someone asking if I want to meet them somewhere, but it never happens. I just sit here hungry. When you go to lunch alone in work clothes, people know that you have no work friends. They sometimes point at you, even if they too are alone. I call them people pointers. Point being, I really need to just start bringing my own lunch.

Another interesting thing I was thinking about...
when I was in grade school, my DARE teacher, Officer Glassman, used to tell us about people who formed gangs, and how there were two opposing sides. To signify their side to their fellow members, they would wear things like colored bands on their arms that reflected the gang they were in, so they could recognize other members, as well as distinguish their enemies. Little did I know Officer Glassman was describing American Politics.

WAR - Not In Our Name!

Unless your name is Warren, Warner, or Ward.

Then, technically, it is.. in your name.

The other day I was looking up something on google to show my brother and as I was clicking through the results, he said to me, "You're an 'o' clicker?!" I realized that he wasn't trying to refer to me by a racial slur, but rather had commented that when using google, to go to the next page, I click the the O icon instead of the 2 (number) associated with the next page. This made me think that there are probably 3 types of googlers out there.
  • O Clickers

  • Number Clickers

  • Previous/Next clickers
My question then is: What kind of clicker are you? (please respond, otherwise this post was stupid)

I hate posting bad news all the time. Last night, both Jason and his girlfriend Rachel's cars got broken into and their stereos got stolen. This was right outside the front of out house in Arvada. They went inside my car (via my unlocked door) but did not steal, break or try to get anything.

This was kind of interesting because Rachel had left her purse in the passenger seat of her car, in plain sight with $500 in it. They chose to steal her $90 stereo in stead. The got Jason's iPod mini, and his window was smashed and everything. All I can say is that I'm glad Jason works at Soundtrack now. That sucks so bad to have your stuff stolen.

I was wondering why they didn't steal my stereo. More importantly, why they didn't try. After thinking about this and looking at it for a while, I realized that they either A) Got spooked and fled, or more likely B) Saw a cable coming out the front of my stereo (my mini in cord for my iPod) and thought it was some new fancy fangled alarm that they didn't want to mess with. I just consider myself lucky that I didn't lock my door and that I have a cable running out the front side of my deck.

Criminals are stupid and I hate them.

January 13, 2005

Today was pretty huge for me. My favorite website for the past year or more has been Jason Kottke's kottke.org. It's just his personal blog, but it's very popular, and along with his near-daily posts, he also puts up about 5 or 10 fun and interesting links every day. Well today, he linked to a picture I made for my flickr account.

The Picture
The Picture has to do with Apple's new iPod Shuffle, a flash-based mp3 player from Apple that lacks a screen. This means you don't know what song is playing next, let alone what song is currently playing. Worst of all, iTunes loads the songs on to it in random order, so if you wanted to play your friend a specific song, you'd have to shuffle through 1 gig of music just to find it (you couldn't go to it directly). The worst part is that Apple is promoting the "never know whats playing next" idea of the player as an advantage. So I made a funny picture about how to "Turn any iPod into an iPod Shuffle in 3 easy steps" and posted it to my flickr account.

The Response
Well, a little more than a day after kottke posted the link, that picture has been viewed 21668 45178 104312 times. Way more than I ever expected. I also heard that the image itself was up on Gizmodo for most of the day without a link, untill I emailed them and asked them to put one (which they did within 3 minutes of me sending the email... nice guys over there). So, there I am a minor minor web celebrity for a day. It makes me happy and if that makes me a dork, then so be it.

The Ploy
I should also mention this. I kind of set kottke up to link to my picture. I got the idea right before I left work yesterday, so I snapped the pictures, put them together and posted it. I knew if kottke saw them, he might think it was funny and in turn, might link to it. First thing was to tag it with "ipodshuffle", a tag that was sure to be popular the day after the iPod shuffle came out. Then, Sara suggested that I comment on one of kottke's photos so he would see my little icon and possibly click on it. Then, I made sure that it was the first picture to come up when you clicked my name. With all of those conditions, I knew there would be a pretty good chance kottke would see it, and, well... he did.

Update:
Just found this other link on engadget. The comments on that site are much better than the comments on my flickr page. Go check it out.

Here is a list of many sites who linkled to it:
Kottke
Gizmodo
The Cult of Mac
Engadget
Hot Links
Additive Rich
fscklog
and some others from google searches.

Cowboy Mark
Cowboy Mark,
originally uploaded by sara.bell.
I don't mean to laugh at my own joke, but I can't help laughing when I see this picture. Sara and I went to Steamboat this weekend and stopped in a souvenir shop, where I tried this hat on.

Say what you will, but I'm dead sexy.

January 4, 2005

Welcome 2005. Welcome welcome. I'm glad its here. I'm starting off the year in better spirits than I can ever remember. This year, I will be:

  • Working at a job that I like to work at and getting paid well for it
  • Doing cool stuff with my awesome girlfriend
  • Moving downtown with my buddy Nick
  • Watching the final chapter of the Star Wars Sixology: Revenge of the Sith
  • Getting to hang out with my sister when she moves back

There's plenty more, but thats just the ones that came to mind. I had a pretty "chill" New Years/Nick's birthday over all. We went to a show at the Adams Mark Hotel. There were many bands playing including, but not limited to: The Kill Fix, Atlas, These Arms Are Snakes, Matson Jones, and Rainer Marina. Rainer Marina took over when Pinback canceled a few weeks before the show. I was quite disappointed, as I really wanted to see pinback. Ah well, we had fun and watched the fireworks at midnight on 16th street mall and shut down Micci's restaurant under Nick's Apartment. All in all it was a good night.
